1. NET.RADIO: LIVE STREAMING

With the coming of RealAudio a lot of radio stations have embraced the possibility to broadcast worldwide. Although this in itself is a revolution for local broadcasters, the coming of RealAudio has put the development of a multifaceted new style of radio, that uses the qualities of the Internet appropriately, in the shadow of the overwhelming presence of extended old style mass media on the net.

WHAT IS BROADCASTED:

  • everyday broadcasting Internet 'radios', which often are closer to traditional concept of radio (some of them also have 'real' radio background, e.g. B92)
  • web- or net- 'radios', which have regular (e.g. once a week) programs only in the net (like ParaRadio, OZOne)
  • mixed on-air + on-line radio experiments, regular and non-regular (e.g. convex_tv, kunstradio, ..)
  • live transmissions from special events (festivals, projects, clubs, etc.)
  • and most extreme - live-immediate-broadcastings and pure-experiments (like - 'we have a good party/lecture/discussion tonight or right now and we would like to broadcast it', etc.)

2. B92 - HOW EFFECTIVE CAN BE SINGLE STREAM

# 24h LIVE

"Radio finally could regain some of its freedom, that is if the next generation internet protocols (IPv6) stricter network-bandwidth-regulation and cost calculation will leave enough space to move.
Starting a radio station on the internet is not as hard as starting one on the ether yet, though attempts are being made to invent ways of control, often by simply keeping all internet access in the hands of one national internet provider, usually the state telecom company. Sending a single stream out into the whole world can change the entire political situation of a country and with that of everybody.
Again, the situation of Radio B92 serves as an example of how effective simply sending one stream of live audio can be.
Authorities in other countries, such as Latvia, now try to regulate the growth of net.radiostations by ordering new net.radiostations to apply for a legal broadcast status when more then 20 streams of audio will be used. Such a status will never be given. This is censorship, and why is there no outrage over it?" /Josephine Bosma/

3. MUSIC ENVIROMENTS - DJ and MUSIC RADIOSTATIONS

Music and sound are tremendously powerful forces for organizing affect; their power to structure subjectivity, in the here and now and over time, makes them an incredibly productive language, one capable of overcoming the linear grids implied by text. This isn't just true of electronic music: all popular music functions, particularly for young people, as a way to construct and define a whole worldview, a whole position, a whole set of ways of organizing the world. It is no accident that you find the logic of youth subculture most strongly articulated around music. And in the world we're moving into, a world full of cultural viruses, memes, decentered subjects and unfolding para-spaces, these issues will only become more important. (E.Davis)
